Academic Probation & Restricted Status

Please note: this information applies to students who have been admitted to McCoy College.  Non-business majors should refer to the college of their declared major for probation information.

McCoy College students whose Texas State GPA falls below 2.0 are placed on academic probation by Texas State and are also placed on restricted status by McCoy College. Academic probation is an indicator that a student is not meeting the minimum academic standards set by Texas State.  McCoy College has a strict probation policy that is designed to address the reasons for poor academic performance directly.

McCoy College Policy

Students on academic probation and restricted status must increase their Texas State GPA to at least 2.0 in the following semester or their McCoy College student classification will be terminated. When a student’s McCoy College classification is terminated, his or her admission to the College is voided. He or she must re-apply for admission to McCoy College once his or her Texas State GPA is above 2.0 and compete with other applicants for McCoy College openings.

Please take note of the following conditions affecting business students’ course schedules on probation and restricted status:

  • Students on academic probation are not eligible to enroll in “new” (not previously taken) upper-division (3000-4000) business courses.
  • With permission, a student may repeat no more than six hours of upper-division courses.(students not yet admitted to the McCoy College of Business are not eligible to repeat upper-division business courses until their GPA is above a 2.0)

Texas State Policy

Students placed on academic probation must raise their Texas State GPA during the first probationary semester, e.g., if a student is placed on academic probation because the Texas State GPA has fallen to 1.85, at the end of the first probationary semester the Texas State GPA must be 1.86 or higher, or the student will be placed on first academic suspension. If the student raises the Texas State GPA at the end of the first probationary semester, but it is still less than 2.00, the student may continue for a second probationary semester (note at this point a student's McCoy College classification has been terminated). If the Texas State GPA is still less than 2.00 at the end of the second probationary semester, the student will be placed on first academic suspension. Complete academic probation and suspension policies are available in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Procedures for Business Students Placed on Academic Probation

A probation hold will prevent you from registering or making any changes to your class schedule. To have your hold cleared and to register or make schedule changes, you must attend a probation advising session with your academic advisor.

  1. To schedule an appointment you must call the advising center at 512-245-1993 or come by our office located in McCoy Hall room 115. We do not make appointments by email. You should call immediately to schedule this appointment, as available time slots often fill quickly. Students must bring their Texas State student ID to appointments. Note: If you attend a probation advising session during schedule changes, you will still need to attend another advising session after the 12th class day before registering for the following semester's courses.
  2. Prior to your appointment, you must print and complete the online assessment sent in your probation email from McCoy College. Bring the completed assessment to your appointment.
  3. In the probation advising session, your advisor provides information regarding McCoy College policies, repeating courses, and probation strategies such as number of hours, course selection, study assistance, and work time.
  4. In this advising session, the PASS (Partners in Academic Student Success) program will be discussed and your advisor will recommend applicable workshops based on your pre-appointment assessment.

Assessment

Print and complete this assessment prior to your probation advising session.  You must bring the completed assessment and your student ID to your appointment.
