Advising Syllabus

What is an Advising Syllabus?

The syllabus is a tool that allows our office to outline the shared responsibilities and experiences for our advisees. It is similar to a class syllabus and uses many of the same headings.

Why an Advising Syllabus?

The syllabus allows us to communicate shared responsibilities and important information regarding advising to our students. The syllabus provokes action and thought on the part of students and advisors. It is consistent with the mission of Texas State and the mission of the McCoy College.

How can a student use the syllabus?

Think of the syllabus as a guide to our services that encourages shared responsibility. It contains valuable information to assure that your undergraduate experience is smooth and that you are well-informed.

Additional Tip: Create a “Degree Plan Binder” just like you do for courses. In the binder you should keep the syllabus and any other documents related to advising and degree planning.
